Platinum Medalist at International Photographic Competition

I can finally share images that I entered into the recent International Photographic Competition (IPC). For those not in the photography world, the IPC is the top competition for photographers to enter. Some photographers call it the Olympics of the photography world.

My images went 4/4 with three images being chosen as Loan images which is the highest honor to be selected to be in the Loan collection. This also earned me the Platinum Photographer Award and enough merits for my Master Artist Degree and the Imaging Excellence Award. This was also my highest case ever for this category, scoring 96-88-87-84.

All of the images I submitted were in the Artist category. In this category, the images are judged on your artistic ability to take several images and create an artistic image so the judging based on your technical skills as an artist, not just a photographer. This also makes it one of the toughest categories to enter. That is why you see the “guide” images with the final image.

With my art, I always try and tell a story and provoke a conversation. This year I really wanted all of my images to tell a story separately and also combined. This really doesn’t matter during the judging because the judges don’t know who’s images they are judging, plus they don’t see the images together. I did this only for myself and to tell a story much like an artist does in a gallery showing.

I wanted to pour my heart into my images and show that even if we are struggling to remember that God is in control.

“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” Isaiah 41:10

Awards and honors are great but when my images were challenged and the judges felt the story through my art it gave me chills and tears of joy. To be able to move someone with your art is really amazing. That is what it’s all about especially since these images are so personal to me.

Here is the official Press Release:

De Pere Photographer Named Platinum Medalist at International Photographic Competition

Dan Frievalt M. Photog, CR. of Frievalt Photography is honored by peers and jurors for high-quality photography.

De Pere, WI – Dan Frievalt M. Photog, CR. of Frievalt Photography in De Pere, WI was named a Platinum Medalist during Professional Photographers of America’s 2018 International Photographic Competition. Frievalt’s work will be on display at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta, Georgia, Jan. 20-22, 2019. This International Photographic Exhibit is held in conjunction with Imaging USA, an annual convention and expo for professional photographers.

A panel of 32 eminent jurors from across the United States selected the top photographs from nearly 5,073 total submitted entries at Gwinnett Technical College in Georgia. Judged against a standard of excellence, 2,622 images were selected for the General Collection and 513 (roughly 10 percent) were selected for the esteemed Loan Collection—the best of the best. The Loan Collection images will all be published in the much-anticipated “Loan Collection” book and over 365 selected General Collection images will be published in the “Showcase” book by Marathon Press.

The level of the award is determined by how many of those four images receive the highest possible honor: acceptance into the PPA Loan Collection, which is displayed at photographic exhibitions, conventions and other photography events. Frievalt was named a Platinum Medalist, meaning that three of his merited images entered the PPA Loan Collection. In 2018, he was one of only 25 Platinum photographers of the Year.
